One of the most common mistakes people seem to
make when they use social networking websites is that they use their real name
as their user name and that is the fastest way to reveal your privacy because you
can be searchable by anyone in the world that has seen/heard of your name.
The other set of people who are putting their selfs at risk are the those who are using their real names as their user name and they also do not bother to edit their privacy settings which means that they are like an open book to anyone coming across their online profile and the information it may include.
A lot of people also post too much personal information that is some times unnecessary to share such as favorite color, address, phone number and even their address. this is one of the biggest mistakes that people commit often. Another thing people should be aware of is posting something like “Having a great time at The Cheesecake Factory” for example this sentence may seem harmless but it may give someone the knowledge of exactly where or how much time he/she has to harm you or your personal property.

This is because people are too lazy or don't have time to sit and read 20 pages of sophisticated text. I agree that we do everything online nowadays which makes our information available to so many different people that may intend on using the information to harm you. I also believe that if we pay attention to securing our information online or offline before our identities are harmed ( by using websites such as lifelock and identityguard ) then we would prevent anything bad from happening.

Thank you very much for this valuable example. and it is surely a perfect example of how sharing too much information can be harmful. a simple post like "going on vacation" or "loving the weather in Miami" may seem innocent but in reality is an invitation to get robbed.
DeletePeople do post too much information on the Internet. Some people even tend to post things that are way too personal for the Internet as well. Employers actually look at this stuff and will make a judgment off of it. Some people just do not think before they post.

Your right, I have personally witnessed some things that were posted by someone who did not own the facebook page. the owner of the page probably forgot to logout of their friends computer and the post was something very embarrassing. Thats why i always make sure to logout of all my accounts when using other peoples computers.
DeleteYou bring up a very good point about people publicizing their every move and where they go on social networking sites. I think this is a ridiculous thing to do, especially for younger people such as teenagers and pre-teens, and that their parents should be more involved with this. This is a very dangerous thing to do and it should be addressed.
